Muran - Most Colorful Vacation
The Muranska plateau is the youngest Slovak national park. It is a landscape that stands
out because of its richness in underground and surface natural beauty attractions:
canyons, springs, lakes, crevices and cave systems. It is the largest natural beauty
territory in central Europe. One can combine the wanderings in the nature with the examination
of cultural and historic curiosities: castles and chateaus. In the bewitchingly beautiful
nature remain, until now, preserved, traditional stiles of life: sheep corrals and horse farms.
Muran is the region most known for equestrian and work horse breeding, in Slovakia.
It is a county full of gems and it is, really, worth seeing.
Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrival to Slovakia, accommodation, informal reception.
Day 2:
From the village of Muran, we will go to
Hrdzava dolina (Rusty Valley), a karst valley with a 100 m tall rock bastion
called Turen. The entire valley is surrounded by rock formations.
Day 3:
We will go to see the ruins of the castle
Muransky hrad that is perched on the top of a rock cliff called Ciganka (altitude 935 m).
The Castle was built in 13th century and ranks among the castles that are the highest in
altitude in Slovakia. From the Castle, one can enjoy the view of the entire national park.
Day 4:
We will visit a horse ranch called
Velka luka (Great Meadow) that is hidden deep in forests. Traditional Slovak races of
saddle and work horses are raised here. Here, we will get to see what a regular day on a
ranch looks like; also, we will have a chance to ride the horses.
Day 5:
Krasna Horka (Beautiful Hill) is a castle that was built in
13th century as a fortress against Turkish invasions. Through viewing the beautifully furnished
rooms, pictures, arms, and even the castle kitchen we will be taken on a tour of historical times.
The mausoleum of the Andrassy family, the former castle owners, is also part of the historical complex.
Day 6:
Traditional sheep farms have been preserved at the
Muran Plateau. We will visit such a farm and taste traditional Slovak dairy products –
zincica (sheep milk whey) and bryndza (sheep cheese).
Day 7:
We will visit a unique cave – Ochtinska Aragonitova jaskyna.
It is one of the only three aragonite caves in the world, and it is the largest one.
Fantastic white aragonite flowers that are considered to be very unique were created in the wall cracks.
585 metres of the cave are open to public.
Day 8:
The rock cliffs of Muran Plateau are a famous rock-climbing area.
We will have a chance to see an actual rock-climbing presentation, and those who feel brave enough
can put their rock-climbing skills to test themselves.
