Tatra Mountains Multi-Day Hike self-guided tour

Hi Barbara,

We're just waiting for our flight home now. We've had a great time: the route was good for us in terms of length, ascent and difficulty, and the mountain huts and accommodation in Poprad were all good. The mountains were stunning and, after a stormy first day, the weather was good to us. All in all, a very good experience!

Thanks for all your help and speedy replies.

All the best,

Tatra Mountains Multi-Day Hike self-guided tour

Dear Barbora,
we have loved the trip!
with one really long and tough day, but the rest was very nice
Yohana isn't to sure walking over all those rocks on the path, so our timetable took much longer..good we had a day of rest afterwards to recharge the battery :)

if I can give one piece of advice; the signs of the path should sometimes be more visible at some places higher up the mountain the signs are scares, and also the paint is pretty vague
someone from the mountain club should really paint the route at more places, and repaint for better visibility
imagine some extra mist and clouds high up, on steep rocky area's; then people could get easily confused about the route and could decide to take a more dangerous alternative at some points

thank you for checking the timetables for Lviv!
We booked a Flixbus to and from Lviv.
wanted to take the train back to Poland, but the trains were all fully booked
The waiting time at the border/customs crossing was very long, 8 and 13 hrs
So in the end the bus ride took forever
But is was worth it, a beautiful city
It was a bit strange to visit, the city, much seems as normal, lots of people doing and enjoying everyday life but, for example, also a huge extra cementery, soldiers with prosthesis walking around, and a alarm going off once a day or so a reminder of how harsh this crazy war is

thank you for your kind assistance for our trip
all the best with you and your company

greetings

Hi Bara,

Yes all back safely. We had a fantastic time and everything ran very smoothly.
We had to change out route on the first couple of days due to snow but the low level options meant we could still make it to eat hut.

The food was great and plentiful and the huts were all very cosy with welcoming hosts.

The one thing that I will suggest is that perhaps you put a bear bell on the packing list. There were lots of hikers that did have them attached to their poles and on one day we passed a group that had said they had seen a bear along the trail we were heading for. It's probably not necessary in the busy summer months when the trails are crowded but as we went in October there were some days when we only passed 2 people all day and a bear bell would have been reassuring! Had their been a option to buy one in the huts we would have done.

Apart from that it was a great trip and I'm very grateful for you having organised it for us at such short notice.

Thanks again.

Hi Bara

Yes, we made it back. I did message Roman but not sure if he received it, so thanks for checking!

The trip was great, thank you, and I’m very pleased we did it. The walks were about the right length each day, and the scenery was nicely varied. It was good to be given alternatives by Roman as well, in case we had difficulties. In the end we followed the planned route, except for the last day where we cut it short and just walked to Strbske Pleso and then down to Tatranska Strba.

Some of the huts were quite basic, which was a bit of a surprise, but it didn’t cause any problems for us. They were a good chance to meet some of the other hikers.

The only other thing was that we didn’t have any poles or crampons so we delayed our first days walk in order to purchase some. Although we could have managed without them in the end, it would have been good to be a bit more prepared with these.

All in all, though, there were no problems and the information provided by yourselves was very good.

I’m not sure if you want to add this as a review on your website, but a couple of other things that might be helpful for other potential walkers…

We started and ended our trip in Kosice, which was is a very nice city to visit and worth seeing if there’s time.
We wish we had taken something to do in the evening, such as cards or travel games. Although some of the huts had a selection of these there wasn’t always something available.

Also, some of the walks are very challenging, but to be fair you do say this under the tour description and I wouldn’t say this underplays it. Sometimes it is good to have a bit of danger.. and insurance is included just in case!

Thanks

Hi Bara - we’re back in Poprad!

Firstly let me thank you for your extremely professional assistance and patience over nearly three and half years since our first pre-Covid booking. “A grade” in terms of response and efficiency. We really appreciate it.

The hike has not been without incident! Unfortunately one of our group was simply not fit enough and I had to take him down the gondola on day two! We spent two nights at Štrbské Pleso but managed a good day walk to Vodopád Skok, before heading to Popradské Pleso the next day. In fact the other three did not complete the Day 5 hike and stayed at Sliezsky Dom, as another of our party found the going too tough!
Anyway I climbed up from Popradské Pleso yesterday and met them half way and today three of us made it up to the hut below Rysy before the weather closed in. Both good hikes (see a couple of photos attached).

Feedback. One of our party should never have taken this on - his fault. Another was inexperienced and although he managed it through to Popradské Pleso it was a struggle at times. My two friends with him (both very experienced) felt that one descent, in particular, down a snowy/icy couloir was very dangerous. Had anyone slipped it would’ve been disastrous. They wore crampons but would’ve liked ice axes for safety!
I think although described as “Advanced” the hike description should definitely go into a more detail as to the challenges and equipment required. I’ve since read a few of the hike reviews and several others make this point.
My Australian colleague and I have over recent years hiked the Four Sisters Mountains in Sichuan China and to Kanchenjunga base camps in Nepal, to name a couple. In December we hiked the Mount Anne circuit in Tasmania Australia which is the closest in terms of difficulty to the High Tatras (you should try it one day!

Anyway we’re all fine, we had a good time, and as I said earlier, appreciate your support in making the trip happen. We’ve plenty of highlights and laughs to look back on!
I’ve a couple of other friends interested - I’ll put them in touch.

Cheers

Jeremy from Australia

Hi Barbora and Lenka,

We returned as planned yesterday. I thought I'd just share our experience with you. I hope you'll find it useful.

First off, the entire trip has been very smooth, from the information given before the trip, tre transportation to and from the airport, the meeting with Roman and the reservations at the huts. Everything has been very smooth. Great job on that! The mountains were amazing. Great hikes, great views and some really interesting passages.
The huts were for the most part great for both lunch and overnight stays.
All in all, we were enjoyed our vacation and I for one would love to return one day. I'll also recommend this kind of vacation and your services to friends.
The weather were overal great. We had summer warmth the first days and winter snow the last few days. It worked out quite well, although we had to change our route on the 4th day, due to very poor conditions on the first top.

We also have a few points that we believe could be improved slightly. Some may be things you can actually change while other may be beyond your reach, but I'll list them just the same.
- The times specified on the plans for the individual days seems to have been in the higher end of the scale. For the most time we managed to get to the huts well before the specified time. It may have been more helpful to just specifcy the hiking time as was listed on the actual maps.
- Based on the above, some more input on optional things to do, would have been welcome input. We went off track a few days to spend some more time seeing things in the mountains and we found that we had plenty of time for that.
- On the description of the hikes for each day, it was only listed once that there were chains along the track. While Roman did mention it, it would've been handy to be able to tell from the description on which days and where on the route the chains were.
- The Horsky Hotel wasn't very impressive or cosy to stay at compared to the other huts we tried. The food and service were worse, and the sanitary conditions were pretty poor. The common areas wasn't very clean either. The location was great though.

Best regards,

Mikkel from Denmark

Good morning Barbora.

Thank you for your mail

The trip went very well with no problems at all . Everything from the airport transfer on went exactly as planned. The huts were fantastic and the mountain trails were stunning. I am already looking forward to going back to Slovakia.

As for the day to day walks I have to say that there was a good blend of hard days and easy days. The mountain trails were very well marked and maintained and , on the trips we did , they were not very busy with people so you really got a feeling of the open country.

My only regret is that I did not get a chance to go to Bratislava , but maybe next time !

Thank you and your team for a wonderful trip and I would not hesitate to recommend your company ( and I already have ) to anyone.

If any trips come up that you think I may be interested in please let me know.

Thanks again

Hut to hut advanced self guided tour in the High Tatras

Hi Barbora,

We enjoyed very much the tour, and we experienced no problems. On the contrary everything worked perfect!
At the Prielom and Priecne saddles we were a bit challenged and surprised about the technical level, and would have appreaciated if it had been described a bit more in detail what we could expect. But as I say we enjoyed it very much :-)

All in all we were very satisfied, and will for sure recommend your company for our friends.

Best wishes,

Hut to hut for advanced self guided tour in the High Tatras

Hi Barbora

Yes back home safe and sound thanks. We really enjoyed our trek in the Tatras. I thought the hotel in Poprad was great and the route through the mountains well planned.
We are experienced mountaineers and really enjoyed the difficult sections over the saddles on days 4 and 5 but we were quite surprised how challenging they were because the route description doesnt give much detail. I think some walkers might find them quite scary and should be forewarned.
Otherwise the trip was very good value and we had a great time.

Thanks for your help

Hi Barbora,

Thanks for your email. We loved it and we wish we could have stayed longer and explored more of the High Tatras! There was a bit more snow in some places than we expected and it would have been nice to have our ice axes just in case, but other than that it was great!

Hello Barbara,

Many thanks for your email and apologies for not having replied before. We are still in Slovakia, spending a couple of days in Bratislava after our trekking. We are flying back home tomorrow morning ?.

We really enjoyed our trekking in the High Tatras! The area is very nice, with impressive mountains and breathtaking scenery. The route selected for the trekking was very good and varied. The mountain huts were of very good standards. Even the weather accompanied us.

In the meantime, thanks for your help and also send our thanks to Juraj for his helpful guidance.

High Tatras hut to hut tour for advanced

Hello Barbora,

We had the best holiday, was everything we hoped it would be, completely fell in love with the high tatras and with Slovakia as a whole!
The huts were beautiful and each had their own individual character!
I struggled with one of the routes (metal chains!!) Was a bit out of my depth and ability, (carrying my backpack on this route was weighing me down a bit made climbing the chains quite difficult for me) so we didn't end up making it to that hut that night, as it got too unsafe (the weather at the time wasn't ideal) luckily we returned back to the hut we stayed at the previous night and they were able to accommodate us for the night. (Luckily! Haha)
I think I may have needed to do a bit more training for that particular climb.
But that didn't matter too much! We are definitely planning on returning again next year to master that route and being a couple more friends with us too!
Thanks again for all your help, greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Dear Barbora,

Our trip was excellent; the scenery was stunning, the hiking routes were so easy to navigate, the accommodation was charming & it was very easy to get food suitable for the 2 of us who are vegetarian. The one slight issue was that we weren’t quite prepared for how much climbing/scrambling the chained sections required, especially in the stormy weather! However, we undeniably had a wonderful time!

Thank you for all your aid organising the trip!

Hi Barbora,

Hut to hut self-guided tour in the High Tatras for advanced

Hi Barbora,

We are indeed home safe, and we had a great time on our trek. Martina did a very good job of briefing us, and everything was smooth and easy...except the hiking itself! Fun, challenging routes made every day interesting, and we summited enough mountains to make our legs ache a bit. :)

The one bit of feedback I'd like to provide is that there seems to be no "check-in" process for the hike. If we were injured and unable to reach somewhere with cellphone service, no one would miss us for at least a week. We hoped Martina would suggest a few checkpoints where we could notify you that we had reached, so you'd know where to look if we went missing. It wasn't a big thing--we instead texted our friends in London each evening to let them know we were safe, but they would not be able to respond as quickly if something had gone wrong. Perhaps in the future, you can designate a few check-in points along the trek.

Otherwise, we were very happy with the experience, the arrangements you made, the route chosen, and mountain huts along the way. All in all, it was an excellent trip!

Hi Barbora,

We are home safe!
We enjoyed the Slovak mountains very much. They were very beautiful. The tour was also excellent. All the huts were nice and the walks were challenging with many options to either make the walks easier or harder. We also thought that the transfer service worked out splendidly and Martina provided us with all we needed; both maps and information.
Someday we will definitely return to the lovely Tatras mountains!
Thank you for a fantastic trip!

Kind regards

Hut to hut self-guided tour for advanced in the High Tatras

We really enjoyed the hike and it was quite challenging and nice at the same time. We hiked 143km over the 6 days. It would have nicer to do it Hut to Hut, but at the end the Hotels were nice and not that far, and the last one in Strbske Pleso had a wellness center, which was really nice after hiking and walking long distances on Wednesday and Thursday.
We took hundreds of pictures and I will definitely suggest the High Tatras to friends and family. From Poprad we went to Bratislava for a few hours, my uncle lives there so we shortly visited him and his family. Then from there we went to Prague, where we stayed for the night, and Sunday we had to drive back to Belgium.
We also met other hikers from Europe, English was an issue for a lot of Czech and Slovak people, but anyway we learned some basic words so it was all good at the end :-).
Martina's debrief was really nice and useful. We had some snow at some parts, a bit of fog, and we were really lucky, no rain at all.

Thanks for everything!

From Hut to Hut Self-guided Tour

Hi Lenka,

Yes I was very happy with my experience of the Tatra mountains. It was a wonderful trip to your country, to see your dramatic landscapes and their natural environments which have been preserved so well. The scenery and ecology of the mountains were above expectations and I would commend your country for its sensitive treatment of these special ecosystems and habitats by only minimally interfering in these landscapes to provide just the necessary help for the visitor to experience and enjoy this unique environment. The constructed paths and the huts I think struck the right balance of making these places accessible for the committed traveller while not imposing in an over-artificial way on these pristine landscapes. Most of the information on the noticeboards about the mountains were excellent too helping to educate the visitor. It is such a privelage to be able to visit this unspoilt wilderness and to have a nature experience so different from my own country. I also felt that the huts provided the right level of service and comfort to the walker providing the essentials without getting into unnecessary and unwanted tourist satisfying. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Tatras to anyone. Thank you again and well done to you and your country.

Fondest Regards,

Larry from UK

From Hut to Hut Self-guided Tour in the High Tatras for Advanced

Dear Lenka

We enjoyed the trip very much and want to thank you for arranging it. The first three days walking were fine but we found the fourth day too long, we were very tired by the time we reached the end and carrying various blisters and minor injuries so we did not cover the planned itinerary for days 5 and 6. We nevertheless had two very good days taking shorter walks and having a trip on the chair lift in the resort.

The accommodation and food we found satisfactory throughout and this was what we expected. We particularly liked Majlatova hut where we had an excellent triple room with private bathroom and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I am glad we stayed there for 2 nights.

Overall we were very satisfied and will recommend it to friends. As for feedback to improve the offer, I would suggest that you provide a bit more information in advance about the demands and difficulties of the route. It was a bit too difficult (long) for us given our age and fitness and walkers who are used to trails in some other countries (particularly the UK) would not expect the distances to take so long to complete. When choosing the trek we looked at the Km figures and elevation figures and thought they were within our capability. We did not account for the amount of time spent ‘rock hopping’ which we were not used to. It might be useful to ask about walkers’ background in advance and offer a shorter option (but still taking in the high saddles) for some clients.

I hope this is useful for you and wish you all the best for the future.

Best wishes

Steve with his family from UK
